Those that know me best will often remark that I, Rory Sloane, am the quintessential gal’s gal. My fondness for figure loving skirts, old Hollywood glam, cookin’ for love, and that maternal pat on the back earned me the nickname Mother Michaels in grade 4. I’m sure then, it will come as quite a surprise that the key to many of my wardrobe gold stars are inspired by hardcore men’s garb.

like new designers:
Wrapping myself up in one of designer Greg Climer’s hat and scarf combos gives me that certain air and I say, ”Cool? Who me?” The amazing accessory, cashmere on the inside and lambskin on the outside, is from the men’s line Godspeed the Well-Dressed Man. Mr. Climer has gotten quite the press in the last year but I wish this line would circulate even more! I know plenty a boy and plenty a girl in need of keepin’ it simple and standing out in the dull dusks of the winter freeze. You’ll be sure to spot me with my metallic hood striding down the street. Don’t you think that Jake Gyllenhaal and I would look great in a matching set?
godspeedthewelldressedman.com
For now, you can purchase Climer’s line in select New York or San Francisco boutiques or by emailing thewelldressedman@gmail.com. But the site is most definitely recommended for fashion inspiration via mega-hot eye candy.

likeWise likes: a robe to live in and love (in)

Thursday December 28, 2006 by Rory

When you’re sitting at home on a cool rainy day, you should always put comfort first but that never means that sexy and stylish have to hit the curb!

Once upon a time, an (ex)boyfriend of mine was practicing his morning shaving routine in my bathroom when he turned to me and said, “Why, do you have so many robes?” This was only the beginning of our misunderstandings around what defined ‘necessity” and he was out the door soon there after.

I shouldn’t have to explain that a lady who lounges needs one robe for tv snugglin, one robe to read the paper, one robe to apply her makeup and another for travel.

If I ever wanted to admit I was wrong (which will probably be never) I might say it with this soft and sweet Juicy Couture Terry Robe . It’s sleeves are short enough so they wont get in the makeup or get in the way of drying your hair, the cut is sexy enough so that you wont feel like your Grandma Edna, and the material soft enough that you can sit for hours drinking cocoa and watching the Food Network. I love the empire waist, hood for hidin’, and the sweet ruffles.

likeWise likes: dress shirts for guys

Wednesday December 27, 2006 by EditorJacquie

I’ve long been jealous of the standard male uniforms. I wouldn’t want to Freaky Friday switch places with a dude. No, I wish that it was fashionable for women to make simple wardrobe choices such as shirt and different tie everyday.

Now you can find what you like and shirts like it on Like.com. Our newly released Men’s Shirts category is a bold move in the direction of Likeness searching clothes items.
Hot Pick from Like.com
While online shopping has yet to replace the dressing room experience, there’s no where else where you can get pages and pages of blue shirts and narrow down the aspects you like in a good shirt.

Shirts are sized by neck, arm, and body width so you’d better be a perfectly proportionate Gingerbread Man if you want to buy any old brand. Guys with thick necks but slimmer torsos are subject to the muffin roll aka bunching of extra material around the waist. (Just as bad as women who wear too-tight pants and spill out of the top.)

Find a brand that works for you and buy in bulk, shirts are less likely to lose their style factor than my skinny jeans and tunic sweaters.
Burberry spread collar shirt on Like.com
Like shirts with a higher second button. The collar will stay upright instead of flaying out so you can get away without wearing a tie and still look professional. Look for a spread collar, like on this luxe Burberry button-up.

Hugo Boss at macys.com
European cuts and high-end brands are slimmer in the torso. Like Hugo Boss
for less excess that maintains a classic cut.

Joseph AbboudJohn Varvatos found on Like.com

Look for shirts, like Joseph Abboud, with thick, heavy cuffs that keep your look sharp without having to deal with cuff links. Or just suck it up and buy a French cuff like John Varvatos hip dress shirts.

There’s nothing like a man in a suit. Just ask James Bond. Or my Dad.

Merry Christmas from likeWise!

Sunday December 24, 2006 by EditorJacquie

I hope all had a wonderfully relaxing holiday. This ’tis the season I learned some valuable travel lessons, while the holidays are all about family and friends, traveling to share the spirit can be rough.

Travel light- while fashion is of the utmost importance, it’s not worth the headache to pack your bags to the max. (Plus you have to leave room for presents!)
tumi travel tote found on Like.com
Like Tumi, great luggage for good travel. Find likeWise buys for 10% Off, plus FREE Shipping on orders over $99 at Irv’s Luggage Warehouse. Get Free Shipping on all orders over $100 at Luggage Pros.

Travel early- nothing says stress like LAX on Christmas Eve eve. Or the day after Christmas. or anytime for that matter. If you’re already online checking in, give the TSA’s site a quick browse to make sure you’re complying with the most recent carry-on restrictions.

travel tolietries on Nordstrom.com

Like plastic baggies for travel sized tolietries and skin care, the only acceptable form for carry-on. Being prepared saves time in the line.

Travel comfortable
- plane air is dry, Evian Travel Trio spray is magic. A travel pillow is worth the tiny extra bulk. Leggings
are not only uber comfortable but they’re ultra stylish this season. And keep your feet cozy.

Like UGGs for warm, snuggly footwear and Sharper Image for cool travel products.

Travel sounds- not every airline is equipped with digital TV. Stock up on mags but even better, load your nano or iPod video with your favorite playlists, podcasts, and tv shows. Traveling for work? Get your last minute stuff done at the gate and use the flight to decompress and catch up on your fave celeb gossip.

Like the newest gen iPod and downloadable tv; noise redution headphones like Bose Quietcomfort 3 will melt away the crying baby in seat 11E. You’ll forget you’re in transit.

Travel sweet
- you may be feeling spicy after waiting in line, taking off your cozy shoes, putting back on your cozy shoes, and waiting out weather delays but a sweet temper will keep you sane and might even earn you an upgrade.

This post brought to you by the on-the-go Editor who’s patience has been tested by 5 airports and 4 different airlines in the past two weeks.

likeWise star stuff: Golden Nods

Friday December 22, 2006 by Rory

Finally, the season of 4- hour broadcasts full of politically inappropriate jokes and one-night only couture is upon us.

Red carpets! Androgynous trophies! Armani and Wang! Oh my! No, no, I’m not speaking of Elton John’s nuptials or the possibility of a Steven Tyler Barbie Doll. I’m referring to the time of year when the weather gets a little cooler and the stars get a little feistier. Yes, my darlings, the Golden Globe nominations were announced last week and I’ve begun my party preparations creating such delicacies as Leonardo linguine with clam sauce and HOT peppers. I’ll have to whip up another treat in honor of the double nominee.

I’m teary-eyed and overcome with joy with the Hollywood Foreign Press’ nomination of the “woman - that – I – want – to - be – my – best – friend – for –life” – voluptuous and adorable Penelope Cruz. I’m preparing myself for catfights between power diva Beyonce and American Idol cast –off Jennifer Hudson (even thought they claim it’s all about the love). I’m fuming that one of the best male performances of the year – Ryan Gosling in Half – Nelson – was left of the Globe list. But let’s be honest my bunnies. After all the envelopes are opened, after all the champagne has been drunk, what we will remember months later is the fashion. And the shoes. Oh and the shoes.

Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, and Matthew Perry announced the noms on a stage full of pretty poinsettias. And while Jessica and Rosario dressed demurely, a white hot pair of heels and geometric dangle diamond earrings are now on our wish lists.
